A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.
Psalm 46:10
There have been many people in the Christian tradition over the centuries that have been given the label of “Mystic”. People like Francis of Assisi, Meister Eckhart, Hildegard of Bingen, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Julian of Norwich, and modern figures like Thomas Mer-ton, encompassing Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant and Anglican paths, exploring themes like divine love, in-ner spiritual journeys, and direct encounter with the Divine Presence, and the inner voice of the Holy Spirit or Jesus who is present in each of us.
Throughout the Bible there are examples of people having this experience. Take for instance the story of Elijah and the still, small voice, found in 1 Kings 19. This describes the prophet’s encounter with God on Mount Horeb after fleeing Queen Jezebel, where God appears not in a dramatic wind, earthquake or fire, but in a gentle whisper or quiet murmur, teaching Elijah that God’s presence is often found in subtle, intimate ways, requiring quiet attentiveness rather than spectacular dis-plays of power, and leading to further divine instruction and comfort.
This experience or similar personal interventions, visions and encounters may happen for you too, with the wisdom and affirmation of others from the body of Christ.
Be still and know that I am God” says Psalm 46:10
A challenge for our lives and the peace, joy and love this brings.
