A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.
Matthew 5:13-20
What is wrong with our public image Christians?
People see church as a place to stay away from! A boring place where boring people go to pretend that they are not bored with other boring people. We are considered to be inoffensively beige. Bland to a fault. Over-boiled vegetables served with tripe. Where have we gone wrong? This is not what Jesus tells us to be! He tells us to be Salt! Flavour enhancer no 1! We are meant to be the ones bringing colour into the world. And I think the problem all comes down to our perception of holiness and adherence to the Law.
See? There is the problem. It’s that ‘L’ word. We have all been somewhat mislead because the word we translate to law is the word ‘Torah’ and Torah’s meaning is quite different to the word Law. The word Torah is more to do with guidance or instruction, especially pertaining to the boundaries of a good friendship. It is not rightness to avoid punishment. It is righteousness for the betterment of all those involved in the friendship, family, tribe, community and relationship. Do you see the difference? Torah is about a vitalized and fulfilling life in harmony with each other and God. It brings all the colours of the rainbow and the rich aromas of an exotic meal. That’s what we are called to be! Let’s make the world scrumptious!
