A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.
Luke 20:27-40
Common to all species that inhabit God’s creation is an instinct for survival. Anyone who has chased a fly around the room with a rolled up newspaper will
have observed this.
“C’mon, you only have 24 hrs to live! Why prolong the inevitable?!!” And inevitable it is, this thing we call death. Little wonder then, that we sit up and take notice at any thread of scripture which might shed a little light on the
mystery of the afterlife.
The strange thing about this scripture however, is that the topic is raised by a group of people who, by Luke’s admission, do not even believe in the resurrection. We listen with great interest though. What will it be like? Do I get to choose my own body? Will I still have a big nose, thinning hair and bulging belly? For me, Jesus gives just enough insight to quiet his opponents. If this were a media conference however, the journos’ would have erupted into a frenzy of questions concerned with the details. So why don’t we get them? Maybe the truth is too perplexing and wonderful to fathom in our three dimensionally limited little minds. All we know is that beyond the precipice of death, there is yet still life with God.
And, whatever it might be like, it’s really good! God is, the God of the Living after all!
