A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.

“What will people say about me?”

Luke 12:13-21

The final will and testament of John Doh…

There is not much his benefactors can do about the hand they are dealt in this situation.

The outcome is not always perceived to be fair, and there is no law which says it has to be. John Doh’s estate belonged to the deceased and he had a right to apportion it where he saw fit. Jesus did well to avoid the complicated situation he was being asked to arbitrate in.

The whole phenomenon of the last will and testament would not even exist if it were not for the very truth which Jesus’ parable attests to. The truth that all the stuff which is accumulated during a life time is no good to you when you’re dead. Mr.Doh’s benefactors will no doubt enjoy the spoils of his labor but will they even miss him? In my line of work, I have been to, and done, a lot of funerals. It is an interesting window through which to view mortality, the finiteness of humanity and the value of a life.

I have buried the rich and the poor. Yet the content of eulogies and tributes

seldom mention what was amassed. People remember how the deceased made them feel.

And I always find myself asking this question; “What will people say about me?”

I wonder whether you wonder the same thing…

Loot is incomparable in worth to legacy.
