A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.
Luke 12:32-40
In some countries which have larger populations and a less egalitarian distribution of wealth, it is considered the responsibility of the wealthy to provide such livelihoods for the less privileged. Quite convenient really. I mean, do you really love vacuuming that much?
When I travelled to the developing world, I admit to struggling to cope with the servant thing. To me, it felt exploitative. I felt fascist and bourgeois. Jesus teaches me that I am no better than any other human being, just financially more privileged. How dare I expect a sister or brother to wash and iron my dirty Big W underwear?
I guess I value my human dignity and consider that a person’s worth should not be defined by power, position or wealth. Christ implores the servant of God to be attentive and alert to the requirements of the master because our master is rather special. He delights in our efforts, indulges us in the luxury of His eternal home, then proceeds to serve us as though we were Him. Would we not delight in serving such a master?
Or do we still cling to the secret ambition of being Him?
