A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.

Luke 14:1,7-14

Have you ever been at a large dinner function when the best conversation seems to be happening, or the most important people are seated, at the other end of the table? Did you wish you had chosen a different seat? It is to that part of us that Jesus speaks when we read Luke’s account of a dinner in Chapter 14. So, the people in Jesus’ story angled to get the seats that they thought would bring them close to the where the action was—only to be asked to vacate their seat when other more highly valued guest arrived. In this context Jesus offered a proverbial (Proverbs 25: 6-7) solution to avoid embarrassment. He suggests sitting in a humbler position and if the host thinks you deserve better, then you can be invited ‘higher’. In many ways this is what proverbs are about: wise sayings that, if followed, can foster a satisfying life in community with others, reduce embarrassment, and oil the wheels of social relationships. This is, of course, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t call out injustice and inequity where we see it.

Happy reading,
Peter Gunn
