Notices 24th August 2025
A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today.
Luke 13:10-17
The things God tells us to do are usually for our own good. Or that’s how they start off anyway. Take the Sabbath for instance. It is an operational instruction given to the user by the manufacturer:
WARNING
If left running 24 hours a day for 7 days consecutively without cooldown period,
human may become unreasonable and prone to harmful sociopathic behaviour!!!
The thing is, we often take what is a necessary and sound ideal and turn it into a dogma so binding, that the very thing placed there to give our lives joy and balance becomes, in itself, stressful and destructive.
Jesus rightly attempts to bring us back on track. What is important about the Sabbath is recreation. Taking time to rest in God’s blessings and countenance. For this poor woman healed, Jesus gives her the first true Sabbath she had experienced in years. And that’s the thing about the Sabbath. Like most of God’s instructions, it is a gift, not a burden.
The Season of Creation is an ecumenical event which, in Australia, coincides with the beginning of Spring, and runs from September 1 until October 5. It is a time of celebrating the beauty of the earth and the splendour of creation, and to enjoy reflecting on God’s great gifts to us in land, sea and sky and all that they contain.
