Luke 10:25-37
Eternal life? Sure! I’ll have some of that…
Just about every species on God’s earth has in built an uncanny instinct for survival. I guess without this instinct we’d be extinct! Where would the fun in that be? Certainly, in our world, life has a huge value. We do whatever we can to live longer, more attractively and better. What do we need to do to inherit eternal life? Well, what is the most significant command in the manufacturer’s handbook?
“Love God with everything you got, and love your neighbour as you love yourself.”
“Well the first one is obvious Jesus, but who are you talking about in the second one?”, asks Jesus’ learned protagonist.
Thus, Jesus tells the parable we have come to know so well.
Who helps the poor victim of this heinous crime?
Was it the priest? He knows the law…
Was it the Levite? It was the book of Leviticus that this lawyer quoted from...
No, it was the Samaritan.
“But hang on, aren’t they those people we hate because of that centuries old feud about where the temple should be?”
Jesus could have made any minority group or even worse, a gentile, the hero in this parable. Do you see? It’s not about jumping through the hoops of organized religion or conforming to the mores of your predominant culture.
It’s about doing the 1 percenters to make someone’s day.
