“all the believers were together and had everything in common.”
A special welcome to everyone joining us in worship at Kingston today. Please join us for a cuppa and drinks for the children after worship
Babel.- Genesis 11’s discourse on the origins of the plethora of dialects which we now devise elaborate computer programs to undo and translate.
Ponder this with me, if you’d like to…
If God is relationship and if good relationship depends on good communication, then is this not a little perplexing? If only Douglas Adam’s Babel Fish was real, and we only had to insert this slimy little yellow creature into our ear to be able to engage in useful conversation with the cabbie next time we visit Istanbonia.
Here though, on the day of Pentecost, the undoing of Babel has arrived 55 days after the undoing of Adam has occurred through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Spirit has come, and this eclectic band of witnesses who are gathered from all over the Diaspora, share in this unprecedented event where culture and language no longer pose a barrier through the ‘un-Babelling’ of the Holy Spirit. They are drawn together in the Spirit where they would be driven apart in the flesh.
And then, in verse 44..,
“all the believers were together and had everything in common”
Wow! What a church! Just one core ingredient.
The Holy Spirit.
This is how our church began!
And the church where diversity is transcended, the Spirit continues to thrive!
